Ten years after her first Scarlatti recording, Angela Hewitt returns to the Baroque composer whose music combines “fertile invention, variegated colours, capricious mood changes, and extraordinary power to touch our sensibilities” (BBC Music Magazine).
For this new volume, Hewitt has selected 16 more of Scarlatti’s remarkable keyboard sonatas. As scholar Ralph Kirkpatrick observed, not one of his 555 or so sonatas can be considered typical. Their appeal lies partly in their striking Spanish influence: stamping feet, strummed guitars and a vivid sense of dance.
Praised for her “gifts as a programme builder”, “deep affinity for Scarlatti and exemplary musicianship” (Gramophone), Hewitt brings these works to life with characteristic insight and imagination. Her own scholarly booklet notes, also available in German and French, reflect a lifetime of studying and performing this endlessly inventive music.
