Tenor saxophonist Billy Mitchell had already made a name for himself by the mid-1950s as a member of the big bands led by Dizzy Gillespie and Count Basie before stepping into the spotlight as a bandleader for the first time with 1962’s “This Is Billy Mitchell” on Smash Records. The sextet combines his Detroit roots with the energy of hard bop: alongside fellow Detroit natives Herman Wright on bass and Otis Finch on drums, the line-up features Billy Wallace and Clarence “Sleepy” Anderson on piano and organ, trumpeter Dave Burns, and the then-rising vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson.
Together, the band creates a sound that is both powerful and nuanced, blending modern jazz sophistication with soul and irresistible swing, from the fiery opener “J&B” to the elegant ballad interpretation of Duke Ellington’s “Sophisticated Lady”. “This Is Billy Mitchell” remains Mitchell’s defining album as a leader, vividly capturing the warmth, assurance and rhythmic precision that made him an important voice in the post-war jazz scene between Detroit and New York.
Verve Vault Series: Cut and mastered by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound from the original analog tapes and pressed on 180-gram vinyl by Optimal. Single sleeve with iconic original artwork.
