Daniel Hope – Born in Ukraine: 150 Years of Ukrainian Music

With Born in Ukraine, Daniel Hope presents a captivating panorama of Ukrainian music spanning a century and a half. Inspired by his long-standing personal connection with the country, the album traces a path from pioneering figures Mykola Lysenko, Yakiv Stepovy and Borys Lyatoshynsky through Sergei Bortkiewicz, Mykola Leontovych and Valentin Silvestrov to composers of the present day. Familiar melodies appear alongside rarely heard works, revealing the remarkable breadth of Ukraine’s musical tradition.

Hope is joined by three young Ukrainian pianists: Alina Pronina, Roman Fediurko and Vitalii Kyianytsia. Together, they perform works shaped by memory and the loss of homeland, by belonging and new beginnings. The programme also includes the world premiere recordings of Alexey Shor’s Footprints in the Sand and Kyianytsia’s Adagio from the ballet The Perfect Scent. Leontovych’s Shchedryk brings to the album a melody known around the world yet deeply rooted in Ukrainian culture.

Bringing together new discoveries and familiar works, Born in Ukraine offers a personal perspective on 150 years of musical history and invites listeners to discover this rich tradition anew.
