With “Dippin’,” a highlight from Hank Mobley’s superb mid-1960s output joins the BLUE NOTE TONE POET SERIES. Recorded in 1965, the album finds the tenor saxophonist leading a first-rate quintet with Lee Morgan on trumpet, Harold Mabern Jr. on piano, Larry Ridley on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. Across six tracks, Mobley displays his remarkable versatility, moving effortlessly from boogaloo and bossa nova to ballads and hard bop. Highlights include the funky opener “The Dip,” the driving, modal-flavored “The Vamp,” the Brazilian-inspired “Recado Bossa Nova,” and the gorgeous ballad “I See Your Face Before Me.” A diverse yet immediately accessible Blue Note classic from one of Mobley’s finest periods.
BLUE NOTE TONE POET EDITION: Stereo, produced by Joe Harley, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original analogue master tapes, pressed on 180g vinyl at RTI, and packaged in a gatefold sleeve with deluxe tip-on jacket.
