With “The Sermon!,” a Jimmy Smith classic joins the BLUE NOTE TONE POET SERIES. Recorded in 1957 and 1958, these sessions bring the unbridled energy of a live performance into the studio and capture the Hammond B3 master at his very best. Smith is joined by an extraordinary all-star cast including Lee Morgan, Lou Donaldson, George Coleman, Tina Brooks, Kenny Burrell, Art Blakey, and other Blue Note greats. The album consists of just three extended performances, giving the musicians plenty of room to stretch out. The bluesy title track fills the entire first side, while the driving “J.O.S.” and the stunning ballad “Flamingo” – featuring a standout Lee Morgan – make up Side 2. Soul jazz and hard bop at their finest, brilliantly captured by legendary recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder.
BLUE NOTE TONE POET EDITION: Stereo, produced by Joe Harley, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original analogue master tapes, pressed on 180g vinyl at RTI, and packaged in a gatefold sleeve with deluxe tip-on jacket.
