With “Brasiliana”, Marc-André Hamelin turns to Radamés Gnattali, a major figure in 20th-century Brazilian music who remains little known outside Brazil. Gnattali’s music brings classical technique into contact with choro, samba and the Brazilian waltz, alongside jazz harmony and folklore, with later works already anticipating bossa nova. The album brings together 22 piano pieces, ranging from dazzling miniatures and lyrical waltzes to melancholy “samba-canções” and larger-scale “Brasilianas”. With his trademark technical command, curiosity and musical authority, Hamelin once again brings a neglected corner of the piano repertoire into focus, revealing the colour, rhythmic vitality and stylistic openness of Gnattali’s distinctive musical world.
