Mishka Rushdie Momen’s Hyperion debut, ‘Reformation’, topped the UK Classical Chart, won acclaim from critics and listeners worldwide and was named one of the Times’ Albums of the Year. For her second album, she turns from England to France, placing the court of Louis XIV and the dazzling musical world of Versailles centre stage.

 

The Sun King’s palace was far more than a royal residence: it was a showcase of cultural and political influence, alive with concerts, dance and magnificent spectacle. Louis XIV was no mere observer, but an accomplished ballet dancer and musician.

 

Mishka explores keyboard works by François Couperin, Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre and Jean-Philippe Rameau. Couperin’s warm, brilliant musical language, conceived for the vast spaces of Versailles, takes on a distinctive richness on the modern grand piano. Jacquet de La Guerre, hailed by her contemporaries as ‘the marvel of our age’, brings French elegance together with vivid Italianate drama in her richly ornamented Suite in G minor.

 

The album concludes with Rameau’s strikingly original Suite in E minor, where courtly dances meet Scottish- or Irish-style gigues and imaginative character pieces such as ‘Le rappel des oiseaux’—often translated as ‘a conference of the birds’.
