With "West Side Story" (Verve Records, 1962), the Oscar Peterson Trio turned its attention to one of the great classics of American musical theatre. Joined by his longtime collaborators Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums, Peterson translates Leonard Bernstein's celebrated Broadway score into the language of jazz. Produced by Norman Granz, the album combines virtuosic interplay with the elegance and swing that defined the trio. Pieces such as "Something's Coming", "Jet Song", "Tonight", "Maria", "I Feel Pretty" and "Somewhere" take on a distinctive new energy. "West Side Story" also continues a recurring theme in Peterson's Verve discography: his respectful yet spirited exploration of great stage works such as "Porgy & Bess" and "My Fair Lady".
