The Smiths released Rank in 1988 as a live album and, at the same time, as a late testament to their already concluded career; it was recorded in 1986 during the tour for The Queen Is Dead. Morrissey’s distinctive vocals and Johnny Marr’s multi-layered guitar work come across here as more immediate and raw than on the studio albums, showcasing the band at the height of their stage presence. The remastered vinyl edition underscores the significance of Rank as an important historical document of British indie and alternative rock from the 1980s.
