Exakt eine Woche vor seinem 28. Geburtstag ging Tenorsaxofonist Johnny Griffin am 17. April 1956 in Rudy Van Gelders Studio in Hackensack, um dort mit einem fantastischen Quartett – bestehend aus Pianist Wynton Kelly, Schlagzeuger Max Roach und Bassist Curly Russell – sein erstes Album für Blue Note einzuspielen. “Introducing Johnny Griffin” sollte den “kleinen Giganten” sofort ins gleißende Rampenlicht katapultieren. In einer mustergültigen Hardbop-Session ließ Griffin seiner Fantasie und Leidenschaft freien Lauf. Neben drei Kompositionen des jungen Session-Leaders (“Mil Dew”, “Chicago Calling” und “Nice And Easy”) interpretierte das Quartett Standards wie “Cherokee”, “These Foolish Things” und “It’s All Right With Me”.
