When it comes to choosing the most influential German-language album, one thing is certain: “Monarchie und Alltag” by Fehlfarben, released in 1980, is always in the top three. Thirty-five years after their debut and three years after their previous hit “Xenophonie,” "Über ... Menschen" offers a reunion with Peter Hein's Düsseldorf band. Do they sound more conciliatory now? No, everything is just fine. Fehlfarben are stubborn. 13 unexcited, timeless, still almost meticulously unemotional tunes. Only Hein's voice has become a little deeper and musically expanded: “Untergang” and “Sturmwarnung” are creaky and dubby, ‘Urban’ is ambitious because it's somehow reggae, and “Rein Raus” is a good example of how Fehlfarben tick musically: disco-no-disco, slow fox pogo with an emphasis on claustrophobia. And then there's “Komitee,” seared no-wave funk that would have fit perfectly with the riots surrounding the construction of the new ECB building in Frankfurt. The vinyl comes with a CD.
