Whenever the best German-language album of all time is discussed, Fehlfarben's “Monarchie und Alltag” is always at the forefront. It was released in 1980. Much water has flowed down the Rhine since then, and Peter Hein feels that “his early work hangs around his neck like a millstone.” At least, that's what he sings in the song “TCM (Polychemie)” from the album “Xenophonie.” Hein's complaint is justified, because Fehlfarben sound incredibly fresh on “Xenophonie.” The opener “Dekade 2” introduces itself with an insane riff; shortly afterwards, Peter Hein's voice rings out with that typical expression, that singing style that only he has mastered: urgent and concrete, yet full of poetry and melancholy. Despite all the seriousness, there is no shortage of nonchalance; Hein hasn't been this relaxed since “Resistance” by Family 5. And in the final track, the almost ten-minute “Herbstwind,” Fehlfarben transform into Riders on the Storm before a Fortuna Düsseldorf scarf dispels the beautiful haunting. The tracks, recorded live at Hansa Studio in Berlin, were produced by Moses Schneider (Beatsteaks, Tocotronic).
